Activity 1 (p. 13)

1.  This is a simple matchbook fold.  After cutting out all the pieces (there should be only 3), fold the top of the matchbook fold down to right above the sentence.

2.  Glue the subject and predicate graphics onto the correct sides on the top of the flaps.  I like to keep consistency here and use red for nouns or subjects and purple for predicates or verbs. Underline the complete subject and box in the simple subject (see the picture above - p. 13) with red.  Underline the complete predicate and box the simple predicate (verb) with purple (see the picture above - p. 13).

3.  Cut along the line to separate the subject and predicate.

Activity 2 (p. 14 & 15)

1.  At the top of p. 14, write the following sentence just as it is here - The big black dog licked the coffee mug.

2.  From the templates below, cut out the small boxes at the top of the first two pages.  Glue down 'complete subject'  on the left side of p. 14 and underline it with red.  See the photo for p. 14 above.  Beside the box, write the following notes:

    * includes all of the words in the subject
    * tells exactly who/what the sentence is about

Under the box, write *The big black dog*

3.  From the templates below, cut out the small box with 'simple subject' and put a box around it with red.  Glue it down on the left side of p. 14.  Beside the box, write the following notes:

    * the main word in the complete subject
    * noun or pronoun

Under the box, write *dog*.

4.  From the templates below, cut out the small box with 'complete predicate' and underline it in purple.  Glue it down on the left side of p. 14.  Beside the box, write the following notes;

    * includes all of the words in the predicate
    * tells all about what the subject is or does

Under the box, write *liked the coffee mug*

5.  From the templates below, cut out the small box with 'simple predicate' and box it in purple.  Glue it down on the left side of p. 14.  Beside the box, write the following notes:

    * the main word in the complete predicate
    * action verb or linking verb
    * may be one or more words
(Jessica can eat lunch.) Put a purple box around 'can eat'.

Under the box, write *licked*.

p. 15

6.  Look at the 6 sentences (see the templates below).  Underline the complete subject in red and the complete predicate in purple.

7.  Box in the simple subject in red and the simple predicate in purple.

8.  Cut out and glue the bottom template (the complete sentences) onto p. 15.  Color and cut out the blank 2 templates (left side red, right side purple).

9.  Put glue dots down the sides of the sentences template.  Use small dots and glue in the indicated section ONLY.

10. Next, get the blank template with the polka dots.  Glue on top of the sentences template so that only the sides are glued down and the middle is free.

11.  Now, cut along the vertical center line between the red and purple boxes.  On the left side, write each complete subject, and do the same for the complete predicates on the right.  Then cut each horizontal line.

12.  Now, do the same thing with the top (zigzag accented) layer and write only the simple subject and simple predicate.
